Interview with Spike E by World Pop Magazine
2. Back in the day
Worldpop: How
did the Blazin' Squad get together?
Spike-e: Well, it all started about 3 years ago. There were
five of us in the group and there were five of us in another group called The
Incredible Crew. We all went to a studio together and decided to record a track.
It all started from there.
Worldpop: Do
you ever disagree when it comes to making music?
Spike-e: No, when we disagree its only for about 5 minutes, we
all decide together what’s gonna happen and it all comes out wicked.
Worldpop: How
would you describe your style of music?
Spike-e: I don’t think you can really describe it 'cos
its so different. I see pop as popular so I don’t mind being marketed as pop.
Worldpop: How
do you feel about being dubbed ‘The So Solid Juniors’?
Spike-e: Well in a way its good because they’re well
respected and they’ve had Number Ones and everything, but in another way
it’s bad because we wanna be unique.
Worldpop: Have
you met the So Solid Crew?
Spike-e: We’ve met a couple of them, we’ve met Romeo and
Harvey, and they’re top geezers. They said watch out for people who don’t
like your music cos they’ll be the ones who are hatin'
Worldpop: Which
artists influence you musically?
Spike-e: Pay As U Go, So Solid, Heartless, Eminem, Dre...everyone. J-Lo’s my
favourite lady.
3. School's out for summer
worldpop: Are you guys still in school?
Spike-e: We’ve all just done our GCSEs. We’ll get the
results three days after the single is released. It was quite hard to fit in the
revision, it was all jumbled up but we worked our way around it and hopefully
it’s worked out for the best. The record company made sure we did everything
that had to be done. Like revision, they respected that and we worked around it
with the music. If it all kicks off we won’t have to go to college.
worldpop: Do you all get on well with each other?
Spike-e: Yeah, we’ve all been mates for so long, we’re all
best friends. I don’t think we could ever be split up. We never have fights,
only 5-minute arguments.
worldpop: Did your record company try to change the group in
any way?
Spike-e: No they haven’t tried to change us at all really,
they’ve given us clothes…some clothes I wouldn’t wear but when you were
them they look wicked so that means they’re doing the right things for us.
worldpop: How would the group react if the record company
did try and make changes?
Spike-e: Well it depends, I mean you have to try new things, if
the record company tell us that something’s gonna go really well, they know
best so its good to try out what they’re doing.
worldpop: How would you describe your fashion style?
Melo-D: I dunno really, quite a lot of its street, just all
brand names and stuff like any other teenager. We have a stylist; I know they
have the best intentions for us.
worldpop: Do you have any plans to tour this year?
Melo-D: Yeah, we’ll be doing all the Feel The Noise gigs,
Smash Hits tour in October, and various under-18 gigs. We just do our
routine at the moment but hopefully as we get bigger our live show will get
better.
worldpop: When will your album be released?
Melo-D: Our album should be out early next year. We’ve done
about 17 tunes, all different types of music.
worldpop: How will you be spending the money you make from
the single?
Melo-D: In different ways, some of it I’ll be saving for a
car and a house but I dunno really, I’ll probably be spending quite a lot of
it on clothes.
worldpop: How have your school
friends reacted to your fame?
Melo-D: You get a lot of jealousy but most of them are alright.
The people that are your proper friends are alright about it but obviously you
get haters saying, ‘I’ll make
more money than you’. I can imagine it getting worse. I’ll let it go
over my head, I’m only bothered about my fans, I ain’t bothered about
haters, I ain’t got time for them.
worldpop: How do you feel about having lots of female fans?
Spike-e: I love it; they’ll be following us around soon. I
wouldn’t take advantage of it.
